Drilling mud decanter centrifuge is the fourth stage of solids separation equipment in a solids control system. It is also the equipment used for barite recovery. Decanter centrifuge can meet the mud purification treatment requirements for different drilling depth ranging from 1000 to 9000 meters.

The drilling mud centrifuge can be horizontal decanter (decanter centrifuge) or vertical type. The decanter centrifuge is mainly composed of centrifuge base, drum assembly with bowl and screw propeller, motors, differential mechanism, big end and small end bearing assembly.

The decanter centrifuge is mainly composed of a high speed drum, a screw propeller rotating at the same direction but a lower speed than the drum, and a differential mechanism. The drilling mud, pumped by a screw pump or a submersible slurry pump, flows into the hollow shaft of the screw propeller. The heavy phase or solid phase, with the help of centrifugal force, is thrown and settled on the drum inner wall, then is pushed forward by the screw propeller and discharged out from the bowl small end. Meanwhile, the separated liquid phase flows out to the big end through the spiral channel of the propeller, and overflows into the collection box. After the drilling mud decanter centrifuge treatment, the solids above 2μm can be moved out, and most useful barite can be recycled. Then the fluid can be pumped back to the mud system or mixing unit for drilling operation.

Drilling mud decanter centrifuge is mainly used to remove harmful impurities and balance the viscosity and specific gravity of the drilling mud, recover barite and save drilling cost.
